Read this before playing, not during.

You spawn in. Now what?

You look on the bottom half of your screen, above your hotbar. You have 1 hour on your timer. What does this timer mean? Each player has a timer isolated from others and owned entirely by you; we’ll talk about it later. You’re at spawn, your timer is ticking, and now you have two choices:

  • Sprint a rather short distance towards the west, out of the Spawn’s safe area, through the PvP zone, and to the Portal’s safe area.
  • Sprint a slightly larger distance towards the east, out of the Spawn’s safe area, through a slightly larger PvP zone, and to the Temple of Time’s safe area.

By the way, the builds themselves are the safe areas. Check for a lime concrete line near a structure; stepping inside will allow you to be safe from PvP unless you were combat tagged previously. We’ll talk about the Temple of Time and the Portal later; let’s first discuss combat tagging and the PvP zone.

The PvP Zone

Illustrated Map of KhronosSMP

The graph above is drawn over the actual world map of the spawn world, so it’s relatively to scale.

Each safe area (Portal, Spawn, and Temple) will be surrounded by a square outline consisting of 1 block wide lime concrete. Everything outside of that outline (the red part of the illustration above) is the PvP zone.

In the PvP zone, you can:

  • Attack others
  • Be attacked by others
  • Use wind charges
  • Get combat tagged
  • Use splash and lingering potions, and use other consumables.

In the PvP zone, or anywhere else in the Spawn World, you cannot:

  • Build blocks
  • Destroy blocks
  • Place boats or any kind of vehicles
  • Use Ender Pearls
  • Wear and/or use elytras

If you hit a player or get hit by a player in the PvP zone, you will get combat tagged. The combat tag lasts 30 seconds and will refresh if the fight continues. Whilst combat tagged, you cannot enter safe areas and you may not log out; if you do, you will instantly die and your items will be dropped on the ground.

There is a zone outside the regular PvP zone where you can do all of the things above for PvP purposes, but we’ll talk about that later.

Now that you know what lies ahead in your journey, let’s see where you chose to go first.

You choose to go to the Temple of Time first

KhronosSMP's Temple of Time

Not quite a dome — more like a giant sandstone mountain.

You walk in. Its emptiness is broken only by an enormous floating nexus in the shape of a pyramid, along with an altar at ground level. What seems to be fragments of the pyramid surround the core.

You walk on top of the altar. There’s a parkour course made out of the pyramid fragments. You start climbing…

…you reach the top, interact with the nexus’s core, and receive 60 Fragments of Time, which you internalize by right-clicking, adding 60 minutes to your timer. Good choice! Now you’ll start with 2 hours instead of one.

The Temple of Time’s nexus core is your main source of time in KhronosSMP, with a 1-hour cooldown and providing enough time to sustain yourself between visits.

You choose to go to the Portal first

KhronosSMP's portal

It’s nice. There’s an abandoned mine and a slightly less abandoned shop with their stock still on display, though no one remains.

In front of you sits a portal — mystical and waiting. You step through…

The Resource World

A beautiful shot of the resource world

Whether you gathered time first or went straight through the portal — welcome to the Resource World!

At first (when you have no spawnpoint set in the Resource World), you’ll spawn at the Rift, an invisible location high above in the sky that brings players from the Portal to the Resource World. You will be given an Ephemeral Elytra, only lasting long enough to glide safely down where you can establish a base.

VERY IMPORTANT: If your inventory is full and you’re wearing chest armor, the elytra will replace it, dropping your armor to the ground below the Rift. The staff are NOT responsible for any items lost this way. This unintended behavior may be fixed in the future.

In the Resource World, PvP is disabled; griefing, stealing, and trapping are also illegal (see rules). You can build, destroy, interact, and kill animals. In fact — you’re encouraged to build your base here. Automatic farms are also allowed, as long as they don’t start lagging the server.

The Menu

KhronosSMP's /menu command

If you run /m or /menu in chat, a user interface will pop up allowing you to check out the following tabs: Time Management, Teams, Travel, Skills, and Language.

Menu — Time Management

You can deinternalize time here. Just as you internalize Fragments of Time by right-clicking them, you can deinternalize your stored time — converting it back into items.

In case you got confused, the two types of time are:

  • Internalized time: The time on your counter, ticking down each second.
  • Deinternalized time: The time you hold as an item, in the form of a Fragment of Time.

After choosing the amount of minutes to deinternalize, the time will appear in the 3x3 grid. Be careful: if you close the menu with a full inventory, the deinternalized time will drop to the ground.

Menu — Teams

While teams can be created anytime, it’s most practical to set one up after gathering initial time from the Temple of Time. You can always set up teams first before doing anything else on the server.

You can create a team yourself by opening the Teams tab and clicking on Create Team while not currently in a team. Enter your team’s name and start sending out invites!

If you’ve received a team invite, you’ll get a notification with a button to join their team.

Joining a team is considered to be extremely important, as if you were to run out of time, your teammates are the only ones wielding the ability to revive you with their time.

You can leave your team anytime using the Teams tab in /m.

Menu — Travel

Wait — the Spawn World has a Portal to reach the Resource World, but the Resource World has no Portal to return… how can this be?

Fear not, for there is the Travel tab in the menu, which will instantly teleport you to the Portal safe area in the Spawn World. You, however, cannot use the Travel feature to teleport to the Portal when you’re already in the Spawn World.

Menu — Skills

This button will lead you to another menu — specifically AuraSkills’s menu. Normally there’d be 11 skills, but we narrowed it down to the 9 most relevant ones:

  • Archery: Earn XP by shooting mobs and players with a bow. Increases your Crit Chance and Strength.
  • Fighting: Earn XP by dealing damage to mobs and players with a sword. Increases your Crit Damage and Regeneration.
  • Defense: Earn XP by taking damage from mobs or players. Increases your Toughness and Health.
  • Farming: Earn XP by harvesting crops. Increases your Health and Strength.
  • Foraging: Earn XP by cutting trees. Increases your Strength and Toughness.
  • Mining: Earn XP by mining stone and ores. Increases your Toughness and Luck.
  • Agility: Earn XP by shifting, walking, sprinting, jumping, and taking fall damage. Increases your Toughness and Luck.
  • Alchemy: Earn XP by brewing and splashing potions. Increases your Health.
  • Enchanting: Earn XP by enchanting, grinding, and combining items. Increases your Luck.

Menu — Language

Choose your preferred language from English or Spanish.

The Outer Spawn

We talked earlier about an area outside the PVP area where limitations such as building, destroying, flying, etc. did not apply. This area is known as the Outer Spawn (as opposed to inner spawn, of the spawn world).

You can find the boundary at which this area starts by walking perpendicular to the path connecting to the 3 structures (Portal, Spawn, and Temple) and finding yourself a red line. Crossing the red line means that you can now break blocks, place blocks, and use elytras.

Since the Outer Spawn may be destroyed and built on, a system has been put in place to wipe the entire Outer Spawn area after each server restart. During this wipe, players will not be able to join the server due to playability and performance reasons.

And that’s it for the tutorial! If the server receives updates that affect gameplay, this page will be updated accordingly. Do keep in mind this tutorial does NOT cover topics such as NPC Shops, the Spawn arenas, etc.

Thank you for choosing to play at KhronosSMP!
